BUTTON DiARiES... customer creations

I'm so excited to be starting the very first Brizel Supplies BUTTON DiARY :)

Enthusiastic button customers are beginning to send me pictures of products they are creating with buttons they have purchased from Brizel Supplies. My excitement, therefore, stems with the concept of creating a Button Diary on this blog showing off some of those items.

Lorraine, aka Etsy shop Pondhopper, bought these lovely buttons:

And embellished some spectacular handmade bridal spats with them:

"A white flocked upholstery fabric is scattered with aurora borealis waffle sequins and trimmed with tiny cotton eyelet lace. Closes with vintage, silver-rimmed white buttons at the side and finished with marabou feathers around the top."

Lorraine's profile reads:

"I am especially captivated by mediums where I can guide the materials, but not dictate the final outcome so that each piece is truly unique. I love the surprises that come from materials that have a story and a life of their own.

My items include salvaged and sustainable materials and I am constantly searching for ephemera and fabrics looking for a second chance: from gently softened and faded everyday cottons to vintage brocades, velvets, laces and trims infused with nostalgic whispers; from retro fabrics and modern day plastics full of attitude to lost trinkets that hold untold stories in their aged patinas; from light as air silks permeated with romance to wool roving harvested from well-loved sheep with names! Each piece created evolves from this multitude of sustainable fibres, rescued materials and lingering histories."

personal project update: Brizel SiLK TAPESTRY RUG

My birthday gift to myself this year was to focus my crafting energies during the month of August on the creation of a large Brizel Silk Tapestry Mini Rug.

This project was going to be an extra special endeavor... as my plan was to make a rug that would serve as a mat for my tarot readings. Being a Virgo Pisces... it is natural for me to desire to manifest my spiritual ideas into products that nourish the soul. Many, if not all, of the lovely creations in the Brizel Handcrafts store are the culmination of this type of work- an expression of my love of life, which I see as a spiritual journey.

Tarot, for me, is a tool that aids my personal progress and spiritual growth. I take this voyage seriously because my development as a human being assists me in being a better happier person. The tarot deck that I work with, which imagery & archetypes are rooted in celtic shamanistic lore, is called the Greenwood deck and was created with deep thought and passion by Chesca Potter.

The sensory inner knowings evoked by my personal interpretations of the imagery and symbolism in the Greenwood Tarot feeds the 'Child Self' within myself which, in turn, better communicates with 'Divine Self'. As a student of art history, an artist and a craftsperson... I understand how powerfully the visual realms leaves its impression upon me.

A few years ago, I conceived of a tarot spread for my personal readings... it is an 11 card spread with 5 cards above, 1 at the center, and 5 cards below. I call it the 'the Eye spread' because it is shaped like an eye.

The five cards 'above' deal with the visible realms... what's above the horizon, what is & is about to be, what's seen & known, personal allies and what resides in the conscious.

The card at the center is the 'Focus' card- it is the focal point & lens of the reading.

The five cards 'below' represent the invisible realms... what's below the surface, what has been & is gone, what's unseen & unknown, what's secret & mysterious, personal challenges, and what resides in the unconsious.

Sun, Sky & Fire represent those visible
'above the horizon' realms...
a Divine Eye to better see and Focus with...
Moon, Water & Earth represent those
invisible 'below the surface' realms...

Brizel Silk Tapestry is a technique I developed...
a cross between weaving, tapestry & crochet work.

Because my rugs begin at the center and spiral outwards... I adapted upon crochet to produce tapestries that, in the end, are thicker than a warp & weft would have produced if a weaving method had been adopted.

I use yarns that are made from reclaimed silk sari loom warps, and other 'eco friendly' yarns such as banana silk, a vegan yarn made from banana fibers.

Many are naturally multicolored since different colored silk sari loom warps are spun together; or they have been hand painted to produce variegated colors.

The enlightening Sun is made of raw silk sari yarn... and the Sky from a variegated banana silk.

The psychic Divine Eye is made with an assortment of silk sari yarns... dark blue, multicolored hazel browns, then a white, black & purple mix; completed & contoured with a variegated purple rayon silk yarn.

The dark Moon, including its sliver, is made of single colored banana silks... whilst its 'sky' is a variegated green, blue and originally orange banana yarn. The orange was then over-dyed to keep the colors subdued and dark toned.

This shaped rug is contoured with a black banana silk yarn and embellished with vintage or antique buttons.

Where 'above' & 'below' meet... resides a golden astrological vintage metal button...

The upper side edge is embellished with golden spiral shell motif buttons...
whilst the upper top edge showcases pierced golden sun spirals, also vintage buttons...

In the upper left corner- my Air animal totem...
a productive Bee...

At the center of the top edge...
a gorgeous golden metal button with a Sun & spiral...

On the upper corner... my Fire animal totem...
a smart Fox...

Half way through and on the opposite hinge
of 'above' & 'below'...
a silver astrological vintage metal button...

Entering the realms of 'below'...

The lower side edge is embellished with dark blue glass buttons with multiple spirals...
whilst the lower bottom edge showcases bold silver spirals on black glass...

In the lower right corner... my Earth animal totem...
a protective Bear... made of adventurine stone...

At the center of the bottom edge...
a magical antique steel cut button
of a crescent Moon & stars

The left corner is home to my Water animal totem...
a wise silvery Salmon...
a bead made of painted fired clay

This is the largest Brizel Silk Tapestry Mini Rug to date...
a 40 hour textile creation measuring approx 20" x 24" at its widest points.

I want to express my gratitude to my two extra special Etsy Friends... Karen from the Faery Cupboard and Laura from lkfarnsworth Studio... both of whom encouraged & inspired me in more ways than one. Please visit their wondrous Etsy stores by clicking on their store names mentioned above.

And also my deep thanks goes to my sister, Dana, who has been generously sending me audio cd installments of Anne McCaffrey's Dragon series all year... many of which have been listened to whilst creating Brizel Silk Tapestry Rugs.

lovely Czech glass buttons @ Brizel Supplies

Ahh... buttons !!! what can I say... I just ADORE them...

"I've never met a button I didn't like" and I must admit that's just about 100% true... which makes me unbelievable satiable... lol

The direct result of this passion was the creation of Brizel Supplies on Etsy.com. This store is devoted to buttons as well as to my wonderful collection of handwoven sashes from Guatemala. There are over 200 Lots of buttons listed and i wait impatiently to sell some... just so that i can list more. Yep, that's me... hopelessly in love with buttons !

And as per usual I ramble... this morning I want to introduce you to some of the new Czech glass buttons that now grace the inventory at Brizel Supplies.

They measure approximately 1" in diameter and "oh my !" aren't they a collector's dream ?! They are intense electric blue... in three variations: all electric blue, with a gold wash, & with a silver wash...

I call the ones above FAERiE FLOWERS because let's face it... they are otherworldly... something one would only encounter in the fairy realm !

The ones below have a spectacular SPiDER'S WEB motif... a fabulously spooky set and wonderfully seasonal... n'est ce pas ?

There will be a third set in this series... but I am waiting for one of the variations to arrive... ah patience :)

If you love buttons... Come visit my store !

update from the Spiral Garden @ Twilight

Its early September already and... where is our Indian Summer ? No worries or complaints from me... whatever is... IS !

We are experiencing a usually rare overcast day, up here in the mountains, even with some teensy little rain showers following some dramatic lightning in the distance. We've been having a neighbourhood wildfire since last Sunday (Oasis Fire about 1500 acres) but fortunately for us ranchers this year... its on the other side of the freeway some 5 miles away. Last year it was on 'our' side & we had to evacuate... so 'all's fair in love & war ?' hum...

Oops... As per usual I digress. lol. As i walked the Spiral Garden this morning- picking raspberries and cherry tomatoes- i noticed that the California Fuschia was doing a fine job of blooming...

And then this beautiful rose with a pink ruffle edge greeted me...

And then... i noticed that this brightly flowered bush was waving at me :)

Always nice to see blooms this time of year... the summers here are long & harsh as this garden usually gets 12hrs+ of full sun. This year, the Spiral Garden, has been lovelier than usual- the temperatures have been milder- never going beyond 106F (lol) and I spent many more hours than usual pruning & tending this large scale 80' color wheel of a garden... pruning the rose hips off regularly, for instance, yielded many more new roses throughout the summer. How nice !

A wonderful Etsy TREASURY feature 9/6 - 9/8

Another wonderful Etsy Treasury... created by Vicki Diane... and part of the UPFRONT artist EXPOSED series !

Vicki choose one of her favorite Brizel Silk Tapestry Hip Pouches and inspired by one of Dali's self-portraits... I created this photograph for the treasury:

I love it... its just purrrfectly nutty.

Funnily enough, I've gotten twice the amount of clicks & views on the listing since I uploaded this photo and made it the listing's first image over a week ago. It certainly makes me wonder whether I aught to present all the hip pouches in this manner !

But I digress... Below is a snapshot of the Treasury:

I'm sure those who will look at the above treasury closely will notice that there is a NAKED man amongst the artists. LOL. Yesss... well... at the time of posting this blog... Steveallatphoto had received 2/3rds more traffic than the rest of us. And the next artist with the most clicks is also naked... Bohemianrose in the bathtub !!!

Thanks so much to my EFA Team Member Vicki Diane... who is the owner of Etsy shop VickiDianeDesigns !
